Overview
Being faster on the court is a combination of reaction speed, explosive power, and smart footwork. In this demo, we’ll guide you how to improve your on-court speed by focusing on explosive movement, agility, and efficient footwork through simple, effective drills tied to the TennisGate’s training system.
Step 1
Speed starts in your head
For this demo, we will assume that you already completed a proper warm up. Now we are ready to work on speed.
Since, speed starts with mental processing. we’ll select a drill from the Preparation to Play category to sharpen your mental speed and reaction time.
Setting Up Your Filters:
- Go to the “Preparation to Play” category in the top menu.
- Set the Topic filter to “Life Kinetics.”
- Set the Focus filter to “Speed of Action.”
For this example, we’ll choose the drill “Thinking and Acting Through Colors.” This exercise is designed to activate brain processes, enhance mental agility, and improve decision-making speed.
Step 2
Save your drill in a collection
Start your speed session with this initial drill. To keep your session organized, click “Add to Collection” in the sidebar and give your collection a name. For this session, we recommend naming it “My Speed Collection.”
You can easily add any additional drills to this collection as you build your session.
Step 3
Move more explosively with agility drills
Now, let’s shift our focus to explosive changes of direction. Navigate to the “Functional Fitness” category and adjust the filters as follows:
- Set the Topic to “Agility & Speed.”
- Set the Focus to “Change of Direction.”
For this session, we’ll select the drill “Quick Changes of Direction in a Small Area” to enhance agility and rapid movement.
Step 5
Find instructions for efficient footwork
Being able to move quickly is an important skill, but it is only one side of the coin when it comes to being faster on the court.
Another important building block is being able to move effectively and taking the right steps at the right time.
In the beginning, playing level wasn’t a factor since any player can improve their speed, regardless of their skill level. However, now it’s time to consider your playing level.
Let’s assume you’re at Level 3, where you are starting to work on more advance skills, (remember TennisGate’s 4-Level System? 😉).
Here’s what we’ll do:
- Navigate to the “Technique” category.
- Select “Level 3” from the options Playing Level.
- Combine this with the Focus filter set to “Improving Footwork.”
- Finally, choose the video “Experiencing the Movement Cycle” to work on mastering your footwork mechanics.
Depending on how long your session lasts, you can of course select further drills according to this scheme and add them to your collection.
