Level 2 – Learn the fundamentals

In Level 2 of our Player Development System, the focus is on fundamentals.  Players will work on developing technically solid strokes, that will  allow them to control the ball in different directions, at different speeds, at different heights and at different distances.

In the video below you will find examples of exercises to improve Level 2 skills.

All Goals of Level 2

Groundstrokes

  • You develop a solid technical base
  • You work on early racket preparation, with a clean contact point and a fluid finish to the stroke
  • You start experimenting with different lengths, directions and heights

Serve and Return

  • You work on a solid, basic serving technique eventually using the Continental grip
  • You learn to toss the ball high enough, stretch and hit the ball at the highest point
  • You learn to use your legs when serving
  • You learn the basics of the return

Net Play

  • You develop a solid technical base, with a short swing, a clean contact point and good footwork
  • You experiment with the same grip for forehands and backhands (continental grip)
  • You work to develop balance while volleying
  • You work on controlling volleys to different targets
  • You learn to use the continental grip on overheads along with solid fundamentals

Footwork

  • You learn the movement cycle, with split step, adjustment steps and crossover steps
  • You are constantly on your toes
  • You recover to the right spot after every shot to be ready for your opponent’s stroke

Singles Tactics

  • You practice keeping the ball safely in play by hitting consistent, precise strokes from the baseline
  • You will learn that crosscourt strokes (diagonally across the playing area) offer more space and involve less risk
  • You play high when you are in trouble
  • You start to pay attention to your opponent’s position and try to put them in an unfavorable position

Doubles Tactics

  • You learn where you have to stand on the court and what your tasks are in the individual positions: Server, returner, server’s partner, returner’s partner.
