Throw, catch, and freeze in position

FREE This Coaching Impulse is currently available for free.

The players move freely within the given space with their own tennis ball and toss the ball upward while moving. When catching, the movement is completely stopped: the ball is caught and at the same time the reached body position is consciously frozen for a short moment. Only then is the movement resumed and the next action prepared. The task is performed with both the right and the left hand. This combines ball control and spatial orientation with the quick switch between movement and a stable, held position.

Training Goal

The focus is on the ability to deliberately come to a stop out of a moving action and, when catching, immediately assume a stable position and hold it briefly.

  • Improve hand-eye coordination when throwing and catching
  • Freeze the movement deliberately when catching
  • Develop body control and balance in the freeze position
  • Deliberately involve both hands in the ball actions
  • Switch between dynamic movement and stable position
  • Promote awareness and orientation in space

Coaching Keys

  • Catching means Freeze: As soon as the ball is caught, the body movement also stops and the position is held briefly.
  • Assume a stable position: When freezing, control balance and avoid unnecessary recovery steps.
  • Throw the ball upward in a controlled way: Choose the trajectory so that there is enough time to get into position for the ball.
  • Watch the ball early: Track the trajectory and adjust your own movement in time.
  • Use both hands: Do the task consciously with the right and the left hand.
  • Resume movement: After the short freeze position, release again immediately and keep moving.
